Metformin and long non-coding RNAs in breast cancer
Breast cancer is one of the most important cancers in women. Various types of genetic and epigenetic factors are associated with the incidence, development, progression, and treatment of breast cancer. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) is one of the newest and most important genetic factors affecting breast cancer. In addition, the role of metformin, as an antidiabetic drug, in cancer risk has been investigated in previous studies. The protective effect of metformin on cancers and its potential use in cancer treatment or combination with chemotherapy and radiotherapy have been investigated in many studies related to proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle, tumor incidence and growth. Several inhibitory mechanisms of metformin are associated with breast cancer. Therefore, this study comprehensively investigates the relationship and effects of metformin with lncRNAs in breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer and a cause of death in women. In recent years, many studies have investigated the association of long non-coding RNAs, as novel genetic factors, with the risk, survival, clinical and pathological features of cancers. Recent studies have also investigated the role of metformin treatment, a first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes, on the expression and regulation of lncRNAs or breast cancer incidence, mortality, and survival separately. Therefore, this comprehensive study was designed to investigate lncRNAs associated with breast cancer characteristics, and to identify lncRNAs regulated by metformin and their mechanisms of action in breast cancer. Such studies can provide necessary insights into the mechanisms involved in breast cancer and the function of lncRNAs and metformin for future experimental and functional studies.
